I've been reading a lot about social recruiting lately.  There's a lot of information out there about how companies can strategize and brand to attract the brightest and best talent.  However, when there's a valuable candidate that is new to social recruitment, how do they leverage new media in their job search?

A friend of mine just received news that she'll be laid off from a job she's been in for 11 years at the end of the year.  To say the least, she's terrified.  Ever since she learned the news, we've been brainstorming and researching the best ways for her to pursue future opportunities.  A few things we've talked about are:

  • What king of job she wants
  • What kind of company she wants to work for
  • Her resume
  • Job search tactics above and beyond traditional job boards.

As for the job she wants, that's a little complicated.  Her current position is Internal Corporate Communications.  She's also completing her Master's Degree in Web Design/Graphic Design.  Her passion is web design, but she doesn't have too much experience outside of her schoolwork.  On the other hand, she has tons of corporate communications experience.  In the end, we're going to meld many years of experience with her new experience.

My friend decided she would like to work for another large corporation.  So we devised a strategy where she would follow all her dream companies and any of their employees on social media outlets and start interacting and building relationships…

My friend decided she would like to work for another large corporation.  So we devised a strategy where she would follow all her dream companies and any of their employees on social media outlets and start interacting and building relationships with them over social media.  Then, when she see's a position she's interested in, she has people that she can approach.

This is just the beginning!  She's redesigned her resume and completed an online portfolio that will be brand specific for each employer she submits her resume to.

So, that being said, what are your thoughts on this?  Do you have any additional thoughts or ideas to add?
